Why do firefighters wear those funny clothes?

The Firefighter wears clothing especially made for the work that they do. Each item either protects their body, or helps them perform their duties.

Fire Helmet 
This is made from a  heat resistant strong plastic. It protects the firefighter from heat, water, and falling objects. The shield and the reflective magnets identify the apparatus the firefighter is from. Different colors of the helmet identify which rank the person is. White helmets are chiefs. Red or orange helmets are captains. Yellow helmets are firefighters or firefighter / paramedics.

Firefighting hood 
This hood protects the firefighters neck and ears from heat and fire. It is made from a fire resistive material called nomex.

Face Mask
This is connected to the air bottle with a hose. It supplies the firefighter with regulated air pressure. With fresh air the firefighter can enter dangerous atmospheres to rescue people and to attack the fire.

Turn Out Jacket
This special jacket has 2 layers in them. The outside layer is made from a fire resistant material called Nomex. The inner layer is a waterproof material that keeps the firefighter dry. The yellow and silver stripe is a reflective stripe that allows the firefighter to be seen in the dark. With this jacket the firefighter can go into the dangerous fire area.

Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (Air tank)
This is an aluminum fiberglass wrapped bottle. It is pressurized with 4500 cubic feet of air. It supplies the firefighter with approximately 30 minutes of fresh air, to allow access into the smoke and heat. Without this air it would be hard to rescue people or to find the fire.

Firefighting gloves
These are heavy insulated leather gloves. These protect our hands from the heat of the fire and allows us to work in the hot temperatures.

Rope Bag 
This is a "drop" bag which contains 75 feet of 3/8 inch nylon rope. The rope is used for taking tools and equipment aloft. It can be used as a search and rescue tag line, or as a emergency escape line.

Fire Fighting Boots 
These boots are made of natural rubber with metal toes and soles. Protects the fire fighters feet from water, contaminated debris, and sharp objects.
